Try a transaction
Don't forget to make sure your website works before telling your friends to go on it! Create a test item (price it at 1 cent) and try to use your credit card to buy that item. There is little to configure, so it shouldn't be difficult for it to work on the first try. However, if you hit an error and are unable to solve it, just grab your phone and give us a call, and we'll be glad to help you.
Verifying a successful transaction

Paypal will give you immediate feedback confirming a successful transaction, and it will report back with a transaction number. You should advise your customers somewhere on your site to keep their transaction numbers in case an order is misplaced.

The next step is to verify that the control panel is working properly behind the scene to report orders back to you. Refer to Processing orders on the next page to learn how to check your orders. A properly placed and recorded order should show:

  • customer name
  • items and units ordered
  • sales/tax/shipping breakdown
  • shipping address
  • delivery method
  • date of transaction

If one or more of these pieces of information is missing, give us a call, and we will assist you before you go live.

Finally, login to your Paypal account to verify that the buyer has indeed paid you with the total crossreferenced from the control panel data. Once these steps are confirmed, your transaction is successful.

Troubleshooting

The shopping cart software is built to withstand accidental "mis-clicks" from crippling your website. However, if you think an error has occured that you cannot fix, make a brief note of the error. There are two kinds of errors:

  • Transaction errors involving Paypal
  • Script errors involving the control panel

If an error pops up while the URL field on your browser points to paypal.com, or a subdomain of it, please consult Paypal for further assistance. This is a transaction error with Paypal. Most likely though, the error is caused because you did not enter a valid Paypal e-mail when creating a merchant account. Please refer to Creating a merchant account for details.

If you encounter a script error caused by your website (identified by confirming your website URL on your browser when the error page shows), e-mail us the following information so we can assist you:

  • The URL of the page causing the error. (Just copy & paste the URL straight from your browser).
  • The error message if there is one (It is preferred that you just copy & paste the error message rather than try to paraphrase it to make reporting clearer).
  • The last modification made before the error appeared (if the script ever worked properly at all in the first place).

The proper procedure to report the error is the e-mail the information above to us before phoning in the problem, so that we can pull up the information immediately when you call us.
